Nanyang Professor Beats Harvard And Wharton To Win World's Best Teacher!

Nanyang Business School Professor Vijay Sethi clinches US$100,000 prize, after beating three other professors at live ‘teach-off’ in London

Professor Vijay Sethi, from Nanyang Business School has been named Business Professor of the Year by the Economist Intelligence Unit for being the world’s best business educator.

The information systems expert won the title and a US$100,000 prize after beating three other professors in a live “teach-off” in London this March. The Business Professor of the Year award is the only global contest to recognize and reward excellence in business teaching.

Nominations came from leading institutions such as the Wharton School, Harvard Business School, and London Business School – by over 30,000 business students and alumni.

The finalists for the competition were selected from 222 professors; nominated by students and alumni for the quality of their teaching from 31 universities worldwide.

For the title, four finalists had 35 minutes each to deliver their best lecture to a live audience of undergraduate and graduate business students.

The other professors who made the teach-off finals were Professors Johanne Brunet from HEC Montreal, Darren Dahl from University of British Columbia and Kevin Kaiser from INSEAD.

Prof. Sethi’s winning lecture was based on the subject of digital networks and the dynamics of network-based industries.

He is no stranger to awards and accolades. He also received the Nanyang Award for Excellence in Teaching for 2013 and for 2012 and was the Nanyang Business School Teacher of the year in 2011.

The Nanyang Award recognizes individual faculty who have exhibited excellent teaching practice and enriched the learning experiences of their students through their enthusiasm, care and close rapport.

Prof. Sethi teaches e-business and technological entrepreneurship classes for the Nanyang MBA programme.

He is also deeply involved in preparing and coaching Nanyang MBA students for international business plan competitions. Last year, he coached Nanyang MBAs in the John Molson Business Competition in Montreal, Canada; the International Case Competition on the Strategic Value of IT in Management at CA World in Las Vegas; The Asia Venture Challenge in Bangkok, Thailand; and the regional Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) in Hyderabad, India.

Over the summer, the MBAs also headed to Texas to compete in the Venture Labs Investment Competition at the University of Texas at Austin!
